Semente has recently been experimenting with various types of carbon fiber layups across a range of our surfboard models. We have been testing these boards with our team riders to gather their feedback and determine which applications best suit different wave conditions and surfer styles.
We have been working with two distinct layups. The first is a full carbon vacuum finish, which consists of an EPS foam core glassed with epoxy resin and carbon fiber on both the deck and bottom of the board, finished using a vacuum process. This process maximizes the bond between the glass, resin, and foam, resulting in an exceptionally light and strong construction.
Feedback from surfers has been overwhelmingly positive, with all riders noting an amazing amount of speed and continuous flow. Most found that the boards performed best in smaller surf, allowing them to generate speed effortlessly, even in weaker wave conditions. All of our original test boards for our athletes were based on their favorite small-wave contest boards.
The second construction also consists of an EPS core glassed using epoxy resin. The difference with this application is that carbon fiber is applied only to the deck of the surfboard. This design is similarly lightweight while maintaining excellent strength underfoot.
Our intention with this composition was to allow for a little more flexibility in the finished board compared to the full carbon construction. Feedback on this layup has shown that the boards are once again fast and responsive, while also being more forgiving due to the added flex.
