Back in 1982 Portugal was the surfers dream and Ericeira was the mystical surf trip for all surfers due to quality and rawness of the surf. At the time Nick Uricchio and Miguel Katzenstein created Semente Surfboards the choice of where to set up shop was simple, where is the best surf? Ericeira more to the point right on top of one of the best right handers in Europe, Coxos. Surfing was the driving force behind the partners in the beginning and the passion for surfboard design and construction. The name Semente meaning seed in English was chosen and represented the base of a project that would grow and flourish in the future.
In the early days the geographical choice of the partners was a handicap as Ericeira had a very low population of surfers, most clients were from the Lisbon area or the Cascais coastline. Cars were few and roads were terrible so visits from possible clients were rare. As time passed and the word spread Ericeira and the Semente factory began to experience a strong flow of surfers both from Portugal and abroad. Other major surfbrands began to set up shop in the area with the same intention Nick and Miguel had back in 82, surfing the best waves in Portugal.
Semente surfboards involvement and dedication to surfboard design and construction have had a major impact on Portuguese surfing. Professional and amateur surfers from around the world have knocked on Sementes door and Semente has worked with Portugals top surfers from day one. The constant evolution in surfboards both in design and material have kept Semente surfboards at the vanguard and enabled them to bridge from generation to generation.
Ericeira is now recognized as one of the meccas of surf in Europe, Semente has been here since the beginning. Miguel and Nick are still partners and both extend a thanks to all that have made this journey possible.
The roots run deep from the original seed.
Born in 1958 in West Hartford Connecticut
Nick started surfing in California at the age of 15.
He travelled to Europe in 1978 at which time he fell in love with Portugal. In 1979 Nick returned to stay. Together with Nuno Jonet, Nick began constructing skateboards in Lisbon. In 1980 he moved to Costa da Caparica and with António Pereira Caldas originated one of the first surfboard factories “Lipsticks Surfboards”.
In 1982 Nick and good friend Miguel Katzenstein headed North to Ribamar (Ericeira) with the intention of “planting” a new label in the surfboard market, thus the name Semente (seed). Their location of choice (Ericeira) is what many consider as the surf Mecca of Portugal. The quality of the waves and constant contact with excellent surfers and shapers through the years have tuned Nick’s shaping abilities. His own surfing and feed back from a solid team of surfers have enabled Semente to meet the demands of both national and travelling surfers for many years now. Nick has worked with the best surfers in Portugal throughout his career, the list of national champions is long and Semente surfboards have seen major results on their boards on the World junior tour, World qualifying series and WCT. In 2015 Nick was voted Shaper of the year at the first “Golden Globes of Surfing” in Portugal
All Semente surfboards are designed by Nick and he is comfortable doing any type of board you need. His philosophy has always been to keep things on a personal level between shaper and surfer, and he has no plans of changing that.
